Definition of Deafness

Deafness is a term that is best defined as a condition in which perceivable sounds, especially speech sounds, have little or no meaning for ordinary life purposes.

Deaf people seek to utilize their visual skills for communication while hard of hearing people seek ways to retain their listening and speaking skills. The majority of Deaf people are proud to be Deaf. They consider American Sign Language (ASL) to be the core of their culture, a distinctive component that manifests itself in cultural values.
