What is Deaf Culture
Angela Stratiy
Hello. I’m Angela Stratiy. I’m here to explain about Deaf Culture. Deaf Culture is a group of Deaf people who share its own language, values, history, traditions. Deaf people from all over the world share these same values, traditions and rules. Social gatherings, drama, entertainment, history, sports, religion are all common shared.
Also includes technology such as flashing lights for telephones, TTYs, blackberry pagers, Video Phones, etc.
Secondly, there are normatives which are rules of behaviour used in Deaf Culture. For example, to get a deaf person’s attention, you gently tap them on the shoulder. There are other examples, too.
Thirdly, we have shared values. We are proud to be Deaf. We value our sign language. Our Deaf children and Deaf schools are also deeply valued.
That’s Deaf Culture.
