Indicators of Hearing Losses
- Being able to hear but not understanding what is being said, especially in a noisy restaurant or crowded room. Others appear to be mumbling.
- Difficulty hearing soft or whispered speech;
- Difficulty understanding speech on the telephone or in a theatre;
- Turning up the TV or radio louder than is comfortable for others.
- Feeling of tiredness or stress when in social situations.
- Withdrawing socially. It is more comfortable to stay home rather than visit friends and family; It is easier to avoid social interactions.
- Getting nervous when meeting new people;
- Always asking for information to be repeated. Family and friends complain and get impatient with you not hearing;
- Find that conversations move too quickly to follow.
- Hearing from a distance is more difficult than it once was;
- Find yourself favouring one ear over the other;
- Find it easier to understand men’s speech than women;
- Ringing in the ear;
- Family history of hearing losses;
- Repeated and prolonged exposure to noise in the workplace.
